The WatConnector launched on September 7, 2021, with hourly service between Watertown Mews on Pleasant Street and Harvard Square. Starting February 13, 2023, the WatConnector will go electric and will run every half hour. Thanks to a grant from MassDOT, along with other public and private funds, two new electric shuttle buses were purchased and will replace the existing gas shuttles.
This is a partnership between the City of Watertown, the Watertown Transportation Management Association (WTMA), and WeDriveU, the shuttle operator. The shuttle starts at Watertown Mews, with an additional 3 stops along Pleasant Street, a stop at Watertown Square, and terminates at Harvard Square. It runs during commute hours, 6:30-10 AM and 3:30-7 PM.
Currently, there are four WTMA members participating in the shuttle—The Watertown Mews, Watermills at Bridgepoint, Aver, and Riverworks. As new commercial development is developed on Pleasant Street, more participants will join. In addition, ridership is open to the public, who can either use the TripShot App, or they can purchase a 10-ride pass at the Watertown City Clerk’s office for $10.00.
The change to electric bus shuttles will help the City of Watertown address its climate goals. It will also reduce congestion and pollution by shifting mode share away from driving alone to riding the shuttle service and shifting from gas to electricity as the power source.
